Integrating Wash and Nutrition

چکیده
Undernutrition is the underlying cause of 45 percent of child deaths each year.1 The term undernutrition covers three primary anthropometric measures: stunting, which is low height for age; wasting, which is low weight for height; and underweight, which is low weight for age. Despite targeted and comprehensive nutrition-specific interventions, the persistent presence of undernutrition globally has caused a renewed focus on underlying causes that go beyond lack of nutrients.2

Can water, sanitation and hygiene help eliminate stunting? Current evidence and policy implications
Stunting is a complex and enduring challenge with far-reaching consequences for those affected and society as a whole. To accelerate progress in eliminating stunting, broader efforts are needed that reach beyond the nutrition sector to tackle the underlying determinants of undernutrition. There is growing interest in how water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions might support strategie...
متن کاملWater, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), environmental enteropathy, nutrition, and early child development: making the links.
There is scarce research and programmatic evidence on the effect of poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) conditions of the physical environment on early child cognitive, sensorimotor, and socioemotional development. Furthermore, many common WASH interventions are not specifically designed to protect babies in the first 3 years of life, when gut health and linear growth are established. We...
متن کاملWASH into regional and national plans and programs, expanding WASH human resources and advocacy efforts, and strengthening WASH-related collaboration with recipient countries. II. Child/Maternal Health and WASH Summary: Each year millions of children and women
This document describes the positive effects of safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions across a variety of development priorities. This partial list of research findings demonstrates that incorporating WASH into public health, HIV/AIDS, food security / nutrition, education and other programming can make progress toward all of these efforts more successful initially─an...
متن کاملProvision versus promotion to develop a handwashing station: the effect on desired handwashing behavior
BACKGROUND Diarrhea prevalence increases from around the time that complementary foods are introduced. Improving caregiver's hand hygiene during food preparation could reduce complementary food contamination and enteric pathogen transmission. Washing hands with soap is more common when water and soap are together at a convenient location. We conducted a three-month pilot intervention to evaluat...
متن کاملA Systematic Review: Costing and Financing of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) in Schools
Despite the success of recent efforts to increase access to improved water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) globally, approximately one-third of schools around the world still lack adequate WASH services. A lack of WASH in schools can lead to the spread of preventable disease and increase school absences, especially among women. Inadequate financing and budgeting has been named as a key barrier ...
